Here is an abbreviated study outline. My apologies to the 10 am class--I've added the 8 characteristics of living things to the list you should know and would like you to review the classic experiments of Redi and Pasteur:
Living things
1. Are made up of cells
2. Reproduction
3. Growth and development
4. Have DNA (an inheritable code)
5. obtain and use materials and energy
6. Respond to their environment
7. Maintain a stable internal environment (homeostasis or state of equilibrium)
8. Change over time (evolve)
Be familiar with the characteristics of plant and animal cells, eukaryotes and prokaryotes and with the cell theory. Be familiar with the organelles of plants, paying special attention to the structure and function of the cell membrane and be prepared to identify cells under the microscope.
Be prepared to graph and analyze a set of data and recognize controls and variables.
Be familiar with Diffusion and Osmosis, the impact of size, etc. on these processes and the mechanisms by which living things deal with the forces of Diffusion and Osmosis.
This information is covered in our labs and includes all the reading except for the last 2 chapters assigned, Respiration and Photosynthesis. I will post this information on the blog as well.
